If you're setting up a custom printing business and trying to choose between DTF and sublimation, here's the short version: DTF works on almost any fabric, including dark shirts and 100% cotton. Sublimation only works on polyester, and only on white or very light colors. That single difference determines which technology fits your business — and for most people just starting out, DTF is the more flexible choice. But "more flexible" doesn't mean "always better." Here's the more honest framing: sublimation and DTF are not really competing technologies. They serve different markets. Sublimation is the right answer if most of your orders involve white or light polyester — think sports jerseys, mugs, phone cases, mouse pads, or polyester-heavy fashion items. DTF is the right answer if your customers bring you dark shirts, cotton hoodies, denim, mixed fabrics, or anything where sublimation's limitations would force you to turn away work.
Why this matters in practice: if you buy a sublimation printer to save money over DTF and your first customer shows up with a black cotton T-shirt, you have no way to help them. That customer goes elsewhere. If that happens often enough, your equipment choice has already cost you more in lost revenue than the price difference between the two machines.
Sublimation works through a chemical process: a sublimation ink, when heated to around 200°C, converts directly from solid to gas and bonds permanently with polyester fiber. DTF (Direct-to-Film) prints a design onto a PET film using water-based pigment ink — CMYK plus white — then applies a hot melt adhesive powder, cures it, and heat-transfers the finished film to the garment. The white ink layer is what makes DTF work on dark fabrics: it creates an opaque base that makes colors visible regardless of what's underneath.

A quick note on the sublimation printer cost: $300–$500 converted Epson EcoTank setups are popular because they look affordable. They work for hobby use and very small volumes but are not reliable for production environments. Print head lifespan, ink capacity, and media handling are not built for daily commercial use. This is sublimation's home turf. At 200 identical jerseys on white polyester, sublimation delivers better per-unit economics, softer hand feel, and faster production on a roll-fed wide-format sublimation printer than DTF would. If this is the majority of your business, sublimation is the right call.
Scenario 3: A small Etsy shop needs to fulfill custom orders for 1–5 shirts at a time, mixed fabrics, mixed colors, mixed designs, shipping same day.
DTF wins. The no-setup-cost-per-design advantage, combined with compatibility across all fabric types and colors, is exactly what on-demand single-piece fulfillment requires. Sublimation here would mean turning away any dark or cotton order, which is probably 40–60% of an Etsy custom apparel buyer's requests.
Scenario 4: A promotional products company needs branded mugs, mouse pads, and phone cases — 50–200 units per corporate client.
Sublimation is the standard answer for polyester-coated hard substrates. Sublimation mugs, mouse pads, and phone cases have a mature supply chain and predictable quality. DTF is not designed for hard surface application — that's UV DTF's domain. For this type of order, a sublimation setup paired with a good source of polyester-coated blanks is the right combination.
Scenario 5: A print shop wants to add decoration capability for walk-in retail customers with unpredictable fabric and color requests.
DTF. Walk-in retail is the environment where substrate unpredictability is highest. A customer shows up with a bag of assorted old t-shirts in different colors and fabrics wanting team logos on all of them. DTF handles every shirt in that bag. Sublimation turns half of them away.
Many established print shops run both — and for good reason. Sublimation and DTF don't compete for the same substrates, so they complement each other rather than overlap. A shop with both can take any job that comes through the door: white polyester jerseys go to sublimation (lower cost per print, better hand feel), dark cotton shirts and mixed fabric orders go to DTF.
The practical consideration is capital and space. A complete DTF setup (printer, shaker/oven, heat press, RIP software) costs $4,000–$8,000. A complete production sublimation setup (dedicated wide-format printer, heat press or calendar press) costs $3,000–$8,000. Running both means $7,000–$16,000 in equipment before you start, plus two sets of consumables to manage.
For most startups, the recommendation is to pick one and run it well before adding the second. If you're unsure which to start with, look at your existing customer base or the market you're entering: if dark garments and cotton are common requests, start with DTF. If your work is primarily polyester-heavy (sports, promotional hard goods), start with sublimation and add DTF when the volume and revenue justify the additional investment.
UV DTF is a related but distinct technology that produces crystal labels for hard surfaces — glass, metal, ceramic, plastic, wood. It doesn't replace either DTF or sublimation for garment printing. Think of it as the hard-surface decoration answer to the same question: if a customer wants a branded tumbler or a crystal logo label for their packaging, UV DTF is the right tool, not standard DTF or sublimation.
UV DTF is worth mentioning here because it's a natural business expansion path for shops already running DTF. The equipment is separate (a UV DTF printer with integrated AB film lamination), but the RIP software workflow and the customer relationship dynamics are similar. Many shops that start with DTF for garments add UV DTF within 12–18 months to capture the drinkware and packaging decoration market without needing a separate heat press or powder line for hard surfaces.
Before spending money on either setup, answer these four questions honestly:
What fabric colors and types do your target customers typically want? If the answer is "mostly dark shirts and cotton," DTF is the answer without much debate. If the answer is "mostly white or light polyester," sublimation is worth the cost savings.
What is your average order size? Both technologies support one-piece minimum, so this is less about quantity and more about whether you're fulfilling repeat large orders (where sublimation's cost advantage grows) or diverse small orders (where DTF's flexibility matters more).
How much daily maintenance time can you commit to? DTF's white ink requires daily agitation and a nozzle check before every session. Sublimation ink has no equivalent maintenance burden. If your operation is part-time or you're printing only two or three days per week, DTF's maintenance requirements are more demanding relative to production hours than they are for a full-time shop.
What is your exit plan if the equipment doesn't work out? DTF printers have a more active resale market because of broader demand. Dedicated wide-format sublimation printers can be harder to move if your business pivots. This shouldn't be the deciding factor, but it's worth knowing.
Can sublimation work on dark shirts if I use a white polyester base layer?
Technically yes — some operators sublimate onto a white polyester panel that is then applied to a dark shirt. The result is a visible panel insert rather than a seamless print, and the additional labor and material cost narrows the price advantage over DTF significantly. For most shops, this is more trouble than it's worth. DTF on dark shirts is cleaner, faster, and produces a better-looking result at lower combined cost once you factor in the panel and application steps.
Does DTF wash out like screen printing eventually does?
DTF and screen printing have comparable wash durability when both are produced correctly. A properly produced DTF transfer — correct curing temperature, correct heat press parameters, quality TPU powder — lasts 40–60+ wash cycles at 40°C before showing edge wear. Screen prints at the same quality level perform similarly. The difference is that DTF's wear pattern tends to be edge lifting and cracking, while screen prints typically fade. Sublimation, on compatible polyester, is more durable than both because the dye is part of the fiber and cannot peel or crack.
Is DTF printing good for all-over prints?
DTF transfers are printed on film, so all-over coverage requires either very large transfers or multiple repositioned transfers — both of which add labor cost and create visible seams at transfer boundaries. For true seamless all-over prints, sublimation on cut-and-sew polyester panels is the correct answer. DTF is better suited to chest prints, sleeve prints, pocket prints, and defined-area designs rather than garment-wide all-over coverage.
